Year 2 Crew
Aim for the stars and welcome aboard crew! Are you ready for the exciting curriculum journey we have planned for Year 2?
The teaching staff are Mrs Sarah Holleron and Miss Olivia Chambers. Our learning coaches are Mrs Jane Salisbury and Mr Martyn Peel.
In English we build on all of the children’s fabulous learning from Year 1. We continue to use the Ready Steady Write program, linking high-quality texts with writing.
Reading is a priority for our children. We follow the exceptional READ WRITE Inc. phonics scheme from F2 through to Y2. Children are supported in their learning with small group daily phonics sessions. We also have begun to use STEPS TO READ to further develop our reading strategies and comprehension skills. We ask that children read every night to improve pace, fluency and develop a real love of reading from an early age. Any reading at home can be recorded in the home-school reading logs provided and brought into school to share with the teacher each day.
In maths, we continue to teach using ‘Maths No Problem. We consolidate knowledge of number facts to 10, 20 and 100. Building speed and fluency in our times tables is a huge priority for our crew to allow them to shine in their KS2 learning. Our children will focus on the 2x, 5x and 10x tables at first. All children have access to TT Rockstars where we have regular tournaments-it can be quite competitive between the year groups! Additionally in KS1, we use Maths Mastery to consolidate number and recall.
An ambitious and exciting CUSP curriculum has been introduced for science and some foundation subjects across the school.
We follow a whole school Jigsaw approach to PSHE to support children in developing a strong sense of community and belonging.
PE- We learn how to be skilled gymnasts, work cooperatively in group games and develop our ball skills. Crew members must come to school in the agreed PE kit on their PE days.
