Year 5 Crew
The teaching staff in Year 5 are Mrs Catherine Varey, Mrs Karen Owen and Mr Jason Thomas. Our learning coach is Miss Julie Renshaw.
Welcome aboard, we hope you are ready for a fun-packed, enriched curriculum- hold tight!
In English we build upon the outstanding work our children did in Year 4 with our writing program called ‘Read to Write’ which links high-quality texts with writing. The books which we are focusing on are: ‘When We Walked On The Moon', ‘FArTHER’, ‘The Hounds of the Baskervilles’, ‘The Promise’,’ The Lost Book of Adventure’ and ‘King Kong’.
Reading is a priority. Alongside our new ‘STEPS TO READ’ program which helps to develop reading strategies and comprehension skills, we ask that our children read every night and record the pages they read on their reading logs. Please ensure your child brings their home-school reading book and log to school every week.
In maths, we continue to teach through a mastery approach using ‘Maths No Problem'. A continued focus of Y5 is the children’s knowledge of their times tables. The best way to ensure the children thoroughly know these facts is through regular and consistent practice. All children have access to ‘TT Rock Stars’. Please do not hesitate to contact our staff if you need login details for your child. We also enjoy daily ‘Fluent in Five’ lessons, which are speedy, daily additional maths lessons where crew members practice rapid recall of basic mental arithmetic.
A new and exciting CUSP curriculum for science and some foundation subjects has been introduced across the school and Y5 will learn about a whole host of wonderful and exciting topics.
PE- Crew members must come to school in the agreed school PE kit. Y5 will be swimming in during the Spring 2 term- dates and arrangements will be confirmed nearer the time.
